Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Environmental

Dimension:  Environmental

Activity:  WILD CARD – make a clothing donation

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

On Sunday, we had a wild card, which was pretty much a free-for-all.  I only had two dimensions left at this point, which were the environmental and the physical… Seems like every time these two dimensions were offered, I was either out of town or busy working…   I decided to find an environmental activity to do, since I could obtain the physical one the following Wednesday.   I was sitting in my room thinking about it, when I realized I had way too many clothes I don’t wear, which inspired me to go make a clothing donation at Dakota Boys Ranch thrift store.  I quickly went through all of my sweatshirts and everything and gathered a fair amount of stuff which I brought over to donate. Unfortunately I still have a lot to get rid of, but one step at a time, right?   I figure at least this way, I am contributing to the greater good, and giving my unused clothing a good new home where they may find some use.   I feel good about that!

Activity: Obtain you CAB or CAT Crawler

Sunday was the day to earn your environmental band, and I went to the Student Gov office to try and obtain mine but, as I suspected, they are not open on Sundays. So I went back on Monday and finished out earning my 6th Green Environmental band. Yay!

I’ve heard about the Cab Crawler passes, but for some reason I thought you had to pay for them. Being as this year is when I turn 21, I thought it would be a good idea to get one in case I couldn’t find a ride home. It’s really cool that UND does these passes, because it shows their devotion to going green-and it’s very convenient to get. I’m glad I finally have my Cab Crawler pass because now when I carpool with friends in a cab, I know I’m helping reduce my Carbon Footprint! I’m very big on recycling, but I don’t do a lot with trying to carpool and stuff-not nearly enough as I should. Now with my cab crawler pass, I can get to one place with all my friends at the same time for a really cheap price. It was a smart and easy way to earn my green band!

Salvation Army- Environmental

Dimension: Environmental
Activity: Donate to Salvation Army, Goodwill, or any community food pantry
Saturday, January 21st

As I pulled out my ‘extreme winter gear’ this past Saturday morning, I began to go through my closet to find the items that I no longer need and others might find use for. I realized the amount of scarves, sweatshirts, etc.. I no longer wore and it felt good to clear out some room at my house. Even more, it felt better to donate the items to the salvation army on the south end of town. Donating items I no longer need is a good way to “recycle” clothes and help others out. Clearing out my closet also made me realize how much I had that I selfishly hoarded :). It was an eye-opener and I definitely will not be shopping for a while. It also made me consider other things to donate more than clothes.

Environmental Wellness: Donate!

Dimension: Environmental
Activity: Make a donation to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or any community food pantry
Saturday, January 21st @ 3pm

The activity for the Environmental Dimension I chose to do was donating to the Goodwill. I had a bag of clothes that I did not wear anymore which were in good condition. I mostly had winter clothing in the bag such as a couple of jackets and snow pants that did not fit me anymore. It was very easy to make the donation at the Goodwill. I simply pulled my vehicle into their donation garage, and a worker came out to greet me and took my donation and handed me a receipt. It was a fast and easy process that gave someone less fortunate than I a chance to get proper clothing for the cold winter months. Donating things is a good way to make sure that the items don’t end up in the land fill, and it gives one the added bonus of feeling good about themselves.
