Healthy UND Coalition – Emotional Wellness

Dimension: Environmental
Activity: Healthy UND Coalition meeting
Friday, January 27th at 12:00pm in Swanson 10-12

On Friday I attended Healthy UND Coalition meeting in the lower level of the Memorial Union. I knew prior to the meeting that the meeting focus was Mental Health. I expected to hear information regarding managing mental health as it relates to our college campus. While attending the meeting, I heard interesting information from the 2010 ACHA-NCHA data in regards to mental health. A survey will be administered to UND students this February. University Counseling Center also shared their priorities and goals for the year. The Peer Education Office was also well represented with how they connect to the issue. Overall, this meeting gave me a better understanding of mental health and the importance of managing it as it affects many other aspects of my life. Each dimension is related to one another; this meeting illustrated this point even further.

Activity: Complete online health screening on the UCC website

When: Thursday, January 19

Last Thursday I took the online health screening on the UCC website. I was interested to see what types of categories the survey would screen and what the end result would be. During the screening, detailed questions were asked and a multiple choice answers were there for me to respond with. The screening had me think about things that in the past I thought were “normal” but ended with realizing my view about certain topics were skewed. At the end of the survey, the UCC offered additional information as well as the opportunity to meet with staff to process it further. Overall, I think this is a beneficial tool that allows students to take at home and process through things before coming in a talking one-on-one with a professional.

Alice’s Emotional Pursuit To Wellness

January 19, 2012 ~ Emotional Pursuit to Wellness

Hello,

My name is Alice Taylor and I have started my Pursuit to Wellness today.  I chose to complete the online mental health screening and turn it into the H&W office in the Union.  Surprisingly, I was very optimistic before I completed the screening but when I got my results I was confused.  The results page had, written at the top of the page, Bipolar Disorder.  As I read on it said that my responses are NOT consistent with someone who is Bi-polar and if I needed counseling services to contact the counseling office at UND (I would do later that day).  That threw me for a loop but I decided to stay optimistic and move on.  I chose to contact the counseling office due to some stressors I have in my life right now with the hopes of finding better ways to combat the stressors.  What a coincidence!  On a final note:  Altru’s Pursuit of Wellness gave me the push to do what I have been pondering the past few weeks (contacting counseling services).  I have learned to try new things and not be afraid.  You never know what you may find.

Activity: Complete online health screening

Thursday, January 19th

The activity was to complete an online health screening on the UCC Website and then bring your completed survey to the Health and Wellness Resource Office in the Memorial Union.  I ended up doing the alcohol health screening and found that it was very simple questions to answer.  I was also expecting this screening to take 20 minutes, but I think this screening took less than 10 minutes.  After completing the screening I printed out the results and brought them to the H&W office in the Union.  After getting back from the H&W office I was interested in finding out when the screening said that you should get help.  I took the screening many times increasing my drinks per week and quantity and it was interesting to find out the results.  After completing the alcohol screening I went back and did a couple more screenings just to see what the UCC website had to offer.  It was good to know that there are sites out there to help people if needed.
